Jess Palmer reports:

It's safe to say W1 didn't have the best day of racing, but it gave us alot to work on. The first race just didn't happen for us, we simply didn't attack it properly and the over the 6 minutes or so we were working hard in all the wrong ways. A City crew caught us down the reach and suddenly the adrenaline kicked in for us to push hard enough to hold them off for till the line- a positive sign that we did start to push but they shouldn't have had the chance to catch us up in the first place.

After a short and quite frustrated chat atbh we resolved to go out and hit the next race properly. We didn't end up following W2 down in the end and on the row up Emma started to be in severe pain from her hip- things were not exactly going to plan! Emma decided she felt ok to race and we did go out and hit properly and pushed much harder and were more together in the second race, in relative isolation after some confusing marshalling instructions. Emma was in audible pain the whole way down the course but, and so much kudos for this, didn't give in to the pain and pushed with all of us. The second race felt much better and I think could have been faster despite slightly worse conditions if we had all been fighting fit.

A frustrating and disappointing day where we didn't get to show our true potential.

14th/20 W Student Novice 8+ in 12 mins 15 secs, 208th overall

Clare Sutherland reports:

Alice's cunning plan for W1 to chase W2 and motivate both crews didn't quite work out as a crowded hard and zealous marshall left us a bit late for the division, however Esther calmly took us back to the boat house and when we marshalled for the second time coped with the many confusing instructions thrown our way.

A solid first race for the crew - we kept the work on and a high rate throughout. There was a fair ammount of wind in the Reach but we held off the next womens and mens crews behind us to the finish. Rowing home afterwards we did some really nice paddling and pause strokes.

Men's Single Scull A

9th/9 1x in 5 mins 30 secs

Matthew Causier reports:

The plan was to go off hard for a minute, be technical for 2 minutes then push for the line. The plan worked perfectly up to about half way up the course, then a slight error in my navigation quickly became apparent underneath the railway bridge. After the ducking and climb back into the scull that followed the rowing never really came together again before the finish.
